Creative fatigue

Creative fatigue is the decline in an ad's performance caused by repeated exposure to the same audience, independent of any change in the offer, the audience or the auction. It shows up first as a falling hook rate and rising frequency, and only later as a rising cost per result, which is why teams usually notice it a week late.

Why it matters

Fatigue is the reason creative production is an ongoing operation rather than a project. An ad that works has a finite lifetime measured in impressions against a given audience, and the larger your budget relative to that audience, the shorter the lifetime.

We published decay curves by placement in the 2026 ad fatigue benchmark. The short version is that TikTok decays fastest, app install channels faster still, and Meta feed placements slowest of the three.

How to apply it

SignalWhat it meansTypical lead time
Hook rate falling, impressions flat Fatigue arriving Earliest signal
Frequency above about 3 Audience is saturating Early
Completion rate falling Viewers recognise the ad Early to mid
CTR falling Message is no longer novel Mid
Cost per result rising Fatigue already costing money Late
  1. Watch hook rate and frequency, not cost per result, as your fatigue alarm.
  2. Replace the bottom half of the creative set on a schedule rather than on a trigger.
  3. Vary the argument, not the arrangement. A recombination of the same claim fatigues on the same curve.
  4. Keep two winners rather than one, so you have a warm replacement.

What people get wrong

  • Reading fatigue off cost per result, which lags by days and by then has already cost you money.
  • Broadening the audience instead of replacing the creative. It buys a week and hides the problem.
  • Refreshing with cosmetic edits. New colours on the same claim fatigue at the same rate.
  • Assuming a winner will keep winning. The better an ad performs, the faster it accumulates the exposure that kills it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my ads have creative fatigue?

Falling hook rate with flat impressions, and frequency above roughly 3, are the earliest reliable signals. Cost per result rises later, once the fatigue has already been paid for.

How often should creative be refreshed?

Weekly for TikTok and app install, every two to three weeks for Meta feed placements, faster at high spend against small audiences.

Does changing the thumbnail fix ad fatigue?

It can briefly lift hook rate, but it does not change the argument the audience has already heard. Real refresh means new creative, not new packaging.
