Ad variation

An ad variation is a version of an ad that differs from its siblings in one or more deliberate elements: the hook, the script, the footage, the voice, the on-screen text, the format or the call to action. The point of a variation is attribution: if only one element changed, the result tells you something about that element.

Why it matters

Two things make variations necessary. First, automated placement systems such as Meta Advantage+ and TikTok Smart+ work by choosing between distinct creatives, so a campaign with one ad gives the optimiser nothing to optimise. Second, every creative decays with exposure, and the only cure is replacement.

Most accounts want 8 to 20 variations live per active campaign. Below 8 the system has too little to allocate across. Above 20 you are usually adding near-duplicates that fatigue on the same schedule as each other.

How to apply it

Element variedEffect sizeRead it on
Hook, first 1 to 3 seconds Largest Hook rate
Core argument or claim Large Click-through rate
Footage and shot selection Large Completion rate
Voice and pacing Medium Completion rate
Call to action wording Medium Click-through rate
Caption style and typography Small to medium Hook rate, completion
Music bed Small Completion rate
Aspect ratio only None, it is one ad in two shapes Nothing

The last row is the one that trips teams up. Exporting an ad at four aspect ratios produces four files and one creative.

What people get wrong

  • Counting exports as variations. Four ratios of one ad is one ad.
  • Varying two elements at once and then trying to attribute the result to one of them.
  • Testing 20 variations against each other rather than testing the set against the current winner.
  • Waiting for a performance drop before producing the next set. The drop is the cost you were trying to avoid.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an ad variation and a new ad?

A variation is a controlled change against a known baseline, so the result is attributable. A new ad is an unconstrained attempt, which can be more valuable but tells you less about why it worked.

How many ad variations should I run?

8 to 20 live per active campaign for most accounts, refreshed on a weekly or fortnightly cadence depending on the placement.

Do aspect ratio exports count as variations?

No. They are the same creative in different shapes, and an automated placement system treats them as one thing to allocate to.
