Ad frequency calculator

Frequency is impressions divided by reach. Computing it from spend, CPM and audience size instead lets you see it before it happens, which is the only useful time: this returns your weekly frequency, the frequency each creative carries, and the day the fourth exposure arrives, where our benchmark puts a 45 percent CTR drop.

The formula

Frequency = impressions / reach

Weekly impressions = (weekly spend / CPM) x 1,000

Two adjustments make the output usable. Reach is not your audience size, because you never serve all of it, so the calculator takes the share you actually touch. And delivery concentrates on the responsive part of an audience, so the average understates what your most-exposed viewers see: the fourth-exposure row is keyed to that, because our 2026 benchmark puts a 45 percent CTR drop after the fourth exposure to the same creative.

How to read the result

Weekly frequencyStateAction
Under 1 Comfortable Creative is not the constraint
1 to 2 Healthy Produce the next set now
2 to 3 Saturating Rotate before CPA moves
Over 3 Over-served More creative and a wider audience

Watch frequency per creative rather than per campaign. A campaign at 2.5 can easily contain one ad at 2.5 and seven at 0.2, because delivery concentrates on whatever is winning, and the winner is therefore the ad that dies first.

What people get wrong

  • Reading frequency at campaign level, which hides a single over-served ad.
  • Treating a frequency cap as a fix. It paces delivery; it does not refresh the creative.
  • Using audience size as reach. You never serve the whole audience, and using it understates frequency badly.
  • Widening the audience to lower frequency and calling it a creative solution. It buys about a week.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate ad frequency?

Divide impressions by reach. To forecast it, take weekly spend divided by CPM times 1,000 for impressions, then divide by the number of people you actually reach.

What frequency is too high?

Above about 3 on a prospecting audience, hook rate is usually already declining. Our benchmark puts the onset at a weekly frequency of 2.5 on Meta prospecting and a 45 percent CTR drop after the fourth exposure.

Why is my per-creative frequency higher than I expected?

Delivery concentrates. The platform gives most impressions to whichever creative is winning, so that one accumulates exposure several times faster than the campaign average implies, and it is the one that fatigues first.
