The formula
Impressions per variation = (budget / CPM) x 1,000 / variations
Two thresholds matter, and they are far apart. A hook-rate read needs roughly 2,000 impressions per variation, which is cheap. A trustworthy cost-per-result comparison needs on the order of 15 conversions per variation, which is usually one or two orders of magnitude more spend.
That gap is the whole reason to test in two stages: cut the set on hook rate first, then put real money behind the survivors.
How to read the result
- If impressions per variation is under about 2,000, shrink the set rather than the budget.
- Cut on hook rate at 48 to 72 hours, keeping the top two or three.
- Re-run the survivors against your existing winner with the remaining budget.
- Only then compare cost per result, and only between ads that got comparable delivery.

- Trying to reach conversion significance on 12 variations at once. The budget goes to learning, not to buying.
- Killing variations on cost per result after two days, when the differences are noise.
- Splitting the set across separate ad sets, which multiplies the delivery each variation needs.
- Testing 20 variations on a budget that resolves 5.
