Ad variation calculator

How many ad variations you need is driven by how fast your audience accumulates frequency: budget divided by audience size sets the pace, and the creative set has to be replaced before frequency pushes hook rate down. Enter your numbers below for a set size and a refresh interval.

The formula

Weekly impressions = (spend / CPM) x 1,000

Weekly frequency = weekly impressions / audience size

From there, each creative absorbs a limited amount of exposure before hook rate starts to soften. Our 2026 fatigue benchmark puts that ceiling at 2.5 on Meta feed and Reels and about 3.0 on TikTok. It does not cover YouTube Shorts or app install channels, so this calculator uses 3.0 and 1.5 for those as planning estimates rather than measured figures. Divide the ceiling by your weekly frequency and you get how long the set lasts.

How to read the result

  • Variations to keep live is a floor, not a target. Fewer than 8 gives automated allocation too little to work with.
  • Replace half the set rather than all of it, so you always keep a proven control running.
  • If the refresh interval comes back under a week, your budget is large relative to your audience. Widening the audience buys time; more creative fixes it.
  • If it comes back over three weeks, you are probably under-spending relative to the audience and can push harder before creative becomes the constraint.

What people get wrong

  • Counting aspect ratio exports towards the set size. Four ratios of one ad is one creative.
  • Refreshing the whole set at once, which removes your control and makes the next read uninterpretable.
  • Producing to the number without varying the argument. Near-duplicates saturate together.
  • Using a campaign-level frequency figure when one ad in the set has been over-served.

Frequently asked questions

How many ad variations do I need?

For most campaigns, 8 to 20 live at once, refreshed by half every one to three weeks. The right number scales with budget divided by audience size, because that ratio sets how fast frequency accumulates.

How often should I replace ad creative?

Weekly on TikTok and app install channels, every two to three weeks on Meta feed, faster if your weekly frequency against the audience is above about 1.

Does running more variations cost more?

In media, no: the same budget is spread across the set. In production, one credit per variation in Genyad, so a 12-variation set is 12 credits.
