Video completion rate calculator
Completion rate is completed views divided by impressions. It is heavily length-dependent, so the raw percentage is meaningless across ads of different durations: this calculator returns your rate against the typical range for the length you entered, plus the absolute completions, which is what actually matters.

The formula
Completion rate = (completed views / impressions) x 100
The trap is that shortening an ad raises this number without communicating more. A 30 second ad at 20 percent delivers more completions per thousand impressions than a 10 second ad at 55 percent delivers of its own message, and the 30 second one delivered three times as much message per completion.
| Length | Typical completion | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 6 to 10s | 40 to 60% | Flattered by duration |
| 11 to 15s | 25 to 40% | The usual trade-off zone |
| 16 to 30s | 15 to 25% | Needs a reason to run long |
| Over 30s | under 15% | Usually the wrong placement |
How to read the result
- Compare completion only between ads of similar length. Across lengths it measures duration, not quality.
- Strong hook rate with weak completion is the readable failure: the opening promised something the middle did not deliver, and that is fixable.
- On TikTok completion is closer to a ranking input than a diagnostic, which is part of why the 9 to 21 second window matters there.
What people get wrong
- Shortening ads to raise completion rate. A higher ratio on an ad that says less is not an improvement.
- Comparing completion across placements, where autoplay and sound behaviour differ.
- Ignoring it entirely, which leaves a weak middle undiagnosed while you keep testing hooks.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good video completion rate?
It depends mostly on length: roughly 40 to 60 percent for a 6 to 10 second ad and 15 to 25 percent for a 16 to 30 second one. Only compare ads of similar duration.
Is completion rate more important than hook rate?
They diagnose different things. Hook rate judges the opening, completion judges the body. Read hook rate first, because a weak hook makes everything downstream uninterpretable.
Does a higher completion rate mean a better ad?
Not on its own. Cutting an ad in half will usually raise the rate while delivering less message. Judge on absolute completions and on what got communicated.
