They fix different bottlenecks, and buying the wrong one is the most common way a creative automation project quietly fails. What are the three categories, exactly
Template rendering
You supply a designed template with named slots and a table of values, usually a product feed, a price list or a locale list. The renderer produces one output per row. Nothing about the composition changes: the same layout, timing and music, with different text, images and prices.
This is a resize and populate engine. It is deterministic, which is its main virtue: if the template is signed off, every one of the 400 outputs is signed off. Plainly is the clearest example of the category, with After Effects as the design surface, and Predis.ai does the feed-driven version aimed at social posts. Canva sits at the manual end of the same idea.
Modular recombination
You supply a finished set of components, typically three to eight hooks, two or three body sections and a couple of CTAs, all pre-approved. The tool assembles permutations. Twelve outputs from a pool of seventeen clips.
The point is not volume, it is attribution. Because only one slot changes at a time, you can read which hook moved the hook rate rather than guessing which of forty differences mattered. Worth knowing before you pay for it: Meta and TikTok both do slot-level recombination at delivery for free, which is what dynamic creative optimisation is. Library-driven generation
You supply raw material, not a design: hours of product footage, founder interviews, event B-roll, old YouTube cuts. The tool indexes it, then writes a script and selects shots against that index for each new variation. Two variations of the same brief can share no footage at all.
This is the only one of the three that produces new concepts rather than new instances of an approved concept. That is its value and also its cost: output varies in quality, and you will reject some. The row that decides most purchases is "concepts produced". Template rendering and modular recombination both multiply an existing idea. If the idea is working, they are the cheapest possible way to extend it. If the idea has stopped working, neither of them can help you and both will produce a great deal of well-formatted evidence that it has stopped working.

The last three rows are the ones most often filed under creative automation by mistake. Avatar and prompt-to-video tools create assets. They do not automate the assembly of an ad, which is the part that eats your week: you can use Runway for a shot you do not own and still need something to build the ad around it.
How do I tell which one I need
Answer by looking at what you already have, not at what the tool does.
- You have a locked template and structured data. Template rendering, every time. Multi-locale pricing, catalogue rows, 40 SKUs across four ratios: this is a solved problem and generative tools are a downgrade here. - You have one clear winner and want to know why it wins. Modular recombination, but try the platform's own dynamic creative first, because it is free. - You have footage and no concept. Library-driven generation. This is the case where a template renderer will produce a hundred versions of the ad that already stopped working.

Why the category label misleads on volume
Volume is not the bottleneck people think it is. Our 2026 fatigue benchmark puts week three at 45 to 70 percent below launch baseline, with CTR dropping 45 percent after a fourth exposure to the same creative according to Meta internal research quoted in that report. Its operational conclusion is that throughput of unique concepts, not polish, predicts campaign longevity, and that brands shipping 15 to 50 variants a month see three to five times longer campaign lifespan than quarterly refreshers.
That distinction matters when you read a vendor's volume claim. Ten thousand renders of one template is one concept. Twelve genuinely different assemblies is twelve chances that one survives past day nine, which is roughly when a food and beverage creative hits a 40 percent CTR decline. Most accounts need 8 to 20 live variations per active campaign, and they need them to differ in concept, not only in caption.
