Template renderers scale copies of an approved design. Generative assembly scales distinct ideas. If your constraint is that 800 products each need their own ad, buy a template renderer; if your constraint is that your three good ads stop working by week three, buy generative assembly. Almost every argument about these two categories is really an argument about which of those two constraints is currently costing you money.

The two scaling axes

There are two different things people mean by scaling creative, and they are close to orthogonal.

Axis one, copies. How many outputs you can produce from one approved idea, each differing by a data value: SKU, price, city, currency, offer. Template rendering owns this. Plainly renders data-driven After Effects templates, so once the template is rigged the 400th video costs the same as the fourth, which is roughly nothing. This is the axis that dynamic creative optimisation machinery on Meta and Google is built to consume.

Axis two, ideas. How many distinct concepts you can put into rotation: different hooks, different proof, different shot selection, different arguments. Generative assembly owns this. A tool that reads a tagged footage library can write a new script and pick different moments for each variation, which is a different output rather than the same output with a new price on it.

Confusing the two is the expensive mistake. A template renderer scaled to 500 renders has produced 500 copies of one idea, and 500 copies of one idea fatigue at the same time, because fatigue is concept-level. The reverse failure is just as real. Generative variety cannot put the right SKU and the right price in front of someone who abandoned that exact product page, and no amount of creative freshness substitutes for relevance in a retargeting slot.

The middle ground exists too. Modular video ads, where a tool recombines interchangeable hook, body and CTA blocks, sit between the categories: more concept variety than a single template, less than genuine reassembly. What each category actually costs

The subscription is the small number. Plainly's entry tier was $69 a month as publicly listed in August 2026, Genyad's Growth plan is €99 for 65 credits, and both figures are honest and both are misleading on their own, because template rendering carries a production cost that never appears on the invoice. Prices in this category move often, so check the vendor before you plan a budget.

A rigged After Effects template is a motion design job. In our experience it typically runs one to three days per template for something you would actually put spend behind, and it comes back every time the brand system changes, a new format is needed, or a layout does not survive a long German product name. Budget for a designer on retainer, not just a seat.

Generative assembly inverts the cost shape. There is no template to build, so the first output arrives the same day, but the marginal cost never falls to zero: with Genyad every variation is 1 credit, at €1.93 per credit on Starter and €1.52 on Growth. Uploading footage, editing and re-exporting cost nothing, and credits do not expire, which suits a testing rhythm that is spiky rather than constant. It suits 400 renders of a price card badly. If that is your job, a flat monthly template fee wins on arithmetic and we would tell you so.

The other input cost is the one nobody prices: footage. A generative tool with a thin library produces thin variety, and no amount of tagging fixes six clips.

When to run both

The stack that works for a catalogue business splits by funnel stage rather than by tool preference.

Prospecting is a concept problem. You do not know which angle works, so you need throughput: the benchmark links brands shipping 15 to 50 variants a month to 3 to 5 times longer campaign lifespan than quarterly refreshers, and a typical active campaign wants 8 to 20 live variations in rotation. That is generative work.

Retargeting and lower funnel are a relevance problem. The viewer already knows the angle, they need the product, the size and the price. That is template work, driven by the feed.

The handoff between them is where the value is. Run concept discovery generatively, find the two framings that beat the control, then commission a template rig for the winner rather than for a design somebody liked in a review. Most teams build their templates in the wrong order: they rig first, discover the concept is mediocre, and then pay to re-rig.
